Yannis Stournaras

Yannis Stournaras was born in Athens in December 1956. He graduated from the Department of Economics, University of Athens in 1978.

He obtained his postgraduate degrees from Oxford University. He worked as a Special Advisor to the Ministry of Economy and Finance Greece (1986-1989) and to the Bank of Greece (1989-1994). He is Professor of Economics at the Department of Economics, University of Athens. From 1994 to July 2000 he was Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisors at the Ministry of Economy and Finance and a member of the Monetary Committee of the European Union.  

From 1994 to 1997 he was Vice Chairman of the Public Gas Corporation and a member of the BoD of the Public Debt Management Office.

From 2000 to 2004 he was Chairman and CEO of Emporiki Bank. From 2005 to 2008 he was managing director of Kappa Securities.

From 2009 to 2012 he was Director General of the Foundation for Economic and Industrial Research.

In 2012 he became Minister of Finance. Since June 27th 2014 he is Governor of the Bank of Greece.
